The Roane County Board of Education recognized its 2022-23 Reward Schools during its meeting on March 19. Five schools — Kingston Elementary, Midway Elementary, Ridge View Elementary, Cherokee Middle and Midway Middle — earned the designation.
“This is the most Reward Schools we’ve had,” Director of Schools Russell K. Jenkins said. “We’re so excited about it.”
According to the Tennessee Department of Education, schools are recognized as a Reward School when they show high levels of performance or improvement in performance.
“I want to remind the board that we came up 20% on TVAAS (Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System) on last year’s test scores,” Jenkins said. “Now we have five Reward Schools.”
Laura Fisher, the intervention and accountability specialist/testing coordinator for Roane County Schools, said success rate is one of the indicators that qualifies a school to receive the Reward designation.
“This is the cream of the crop,” Jenkins said. “This is the hardest thing to achieve and these five schools due to strong leadership and great teachers have accomplished this.”
The principals from the five schools stood before the crowd at the school board meeting and received a round of applause.
“Having Midway Elementary and Midway Middle both in that list but you know Ridge View I’m so proud of you all,” Board Member Nadine Jackson said. “You worked so hard to get included in that list and of course Cherokee and Kingston as well. Really proud of those schools for being Reward Schools.”
